Pyelonephritis or kidney infection is a particular type of urinary tract infection. It usually begins in your urethra or bladder and travels up to the kidneys. If not treated properly, this type of infection can cause permanent damage to your kidneys or the bacteria can get into your bloodstream and cause a life-threatening infection. Treatment is usually antibiotics and sometimes requires hospitalization.
